Although time traveling is still a matter of fiction, you have the opportunity to take a nostalgic trip through the Ziller valley. Experience a good old-fashioned ride with the Zillertal steam train through the beautiful Ziller valley. The chugging steam locomotive slowly pulls the wagons along the tracks, while you can gaze out of your window and enjoy fantastic views of the beautiful mountain landscape.
The Zillertal Höhenstraße high alpine road is one of the sights we strongly encourage you to see. With a length of approx. 50 km, this toll road offers magnificent vistas of the Zillertal Alps. The Zillertal High Alpine Road offers you a magnificent drive up to an altitude of 2,020 m – either with your own car, coach, local bus or even by bike.
The Hintertux Glacier, the only all-year-round ski resort in Austria, is just one of many beautiful sights in the Ziller valley. In the Nature’s Ice Palace, you can take a tour through a glacial crevasse with your children, admiring ice stalactites, frozen waterfalls and even a glacial lake. A fascinating experience for young and old alike, even on rainy days. The Spannagel Cave at the Hintertux Glacier is Europe’s largest high altitude show cave. During a guided tour you will learn everything there is to know about the largest rock cave of the Central Alps.
Fügen itself has some great sights in store for you and your family. Near the Spieljochbahn mountain station, you can visit the Öxeltal show mine, Austria's highest mine. At the Widumspfiste museum in Fügen you can learn about the customs and folklore of the Ziller valley. The building itself was first mentioned in 1050. And at the Holzerlebniswelt Feuerwerk – which is centred around wood – you can discover the world of woodworking.
In the ErlebnisSennerei Show Dairy you can learn all about high-quality dairy products. There is also Show Farm with different animals, where you can learn about farm animals and where milk comes from. In the Schausennerei alpine dairy you will learn, how fresh milk from the mountain pastures is processed. You also have the opportunity to taste the products at several stations.
